Sands- Opened December 1952. The building that became the Sands was originally a restaurant with some small time gambling called La Rue. Home to many of the days top entertainers, the "Rat Pack" first performed at the Sands in 1953. This classy Vegas club was purchased by the Hughes Suma corporation, and was finally closed and imploded in 1996. Early Sands chips are exteamly rare and highly collected. The $5 chip pictured here had never been seen until two turned up within months of each other in 1999. This top condition example fetched $12,600 in a private auction. The $25 shown is a ONE OF A KIND and currently sitting in a large private collection . The "cactus" theme was soon dropped, although the "a place in the sun" motto remained for many years. |
